The female body is extravagant and beautifully crafted. It occurs in a range of shapes or types. They are typically narrower at the waist than at the bust and hips. The bust, waist, and hips are used to define basic female body types/shapes.
There are 8 major female body types according to a study of over 6000 women. They include:

1. Straight Body Type
This is sometimes called rectangle or ruler body. Here the hips and bust are balanced, waist is not very defined with a probably flat not round bottom. This body type tends to gain weight in the torso first and then your upper thighs and arms.
The secret to dressing a Straight body type is to accentuate the top and bottom of the body while enhancing the waist line.
2. Pear Body Type
A Pear shaped body is sometimes called triangle. This has a larger hips than your bust and a nicely defined waist, an elegant neck and proportionately slim arms and shoulders. Weight gain here is mostly in your bottom and legs followed by your tummy and upper body.
In dressing a pear shaped body, it is important to enhance and add volume (or the illusion of volume) to your upper body while emphasizing your waist and to create a balanced, hourglass appearance.
3. Spoon Body Type
The spoon body type is what is commonly known as Figure 8! The typical features of this body includes; Larger hips than bust which can be described as having a “shelf” appearance and a defined waist. If yours is a spoon body type, you are prone to gaining weight in your tummy, upper arms and thighs
When dressing a Spoon body type, draw attention to your upper body giving little/no accentuation to your tummy and hips to create a more balanced appearance and an hourglass figure.
4. Hourglass Body Type
It can be described as the most sought after female body type. Ladies from all walks of life will do just about anything to have this great bod. Here, your bust and hips are well balanced with a beautifully defined waist, gently rounded shoulders that align nicely with your hips. You also have a waist that is obvious and gracefully curves out to your hips with a rounded bottom and beautiful side as well as front profile and an upper body that is proportional in length to your legs. This body type screams harmony and balance!
You dress the Hourglass body type is to proportionally fit the top and bottom of your body while accentuating your waist. Wide belts over shirts and dresses are a great way to show off your waist.
5. Top Hourglass Body Type
You have a beautifully defined waist and bust that is larger than your hips, gently rounded shoulders that align nicely with your hips, a waist that is obvious and gracefully curves out to your hips.
For the Top Hourglass body type, you balance your lower body with your ample bust while accentuating your enviable waist. This is achieved by selecting clothing cuts that will fill out your lower half. Look for tops with narrow v-necks.
6. Inverted Triangle Body Type
Your body is an inverted Triangle body shape (also known as an athletic body type) when you have a proportionally larger upper body, broad shoulders, ample bust and a wide back with slim hips and bottom that tend towards the flat side. An inverted triangle body type has s subtle waist and gains weight easily in the belly and upper body.
The key to dressing an Inverted Triangle body type is to balance your broader shoulders, chest and back with your narrower lower body to create more of an hourglass effect. This is achieved by choosing clothes that add curves to your hips and bottom while creating a more defined waist.
7. The Oval Body Type
Sometimes known as an apple body shape, has a large bust, narrow hips, and a full midsection with a tendency to gain weight in the stomach, back and upper body. The waist is undefined and the widest part of your frame with a full shorter neck and full face.
You dress an Oval body type to create a more defined waist. This is achieved by choosing clothing that add curves and fullness to your lower body and tops that taper to a waist.
8. Diamond Body Type
This isn’t one that can be easily found. It is as rare as the name sounds. For this unique body type, the hips are broader than the bust and shoulders with a penchant to gain weight in the stomach, back, hips and buttocks. The waist is undefined and the widest part of the body frame. Also, there is an ample amount of weight in the upper legs.
Dressing this body type requires balance for your shoulders, bust, hips and a more defined waist.You can create this by choosing clothing that adds curves and fullness to your upper body.
